What is the HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base?
The online HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base is an international compilation of
HIV prevalence and incidence data resources from various sources for countries
in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Oceania. The
HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base is designed to provide users with information
on HIV/AIDS and is helpful as both a reference tool and a resource for policy,
research, and evaluation.
About the Data
The
concept of the HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base was developed at the U.S. Census
Bureau in consultation with the U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID), in 1987. The Data Base was created based on an assessment of the
situation with regard to publication and dissemination of the results of the
multitude of seroprevalence surveys and other studies that were being
undertaken. The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base contains studies appearing in
the medical and scientific literature, presented at international conferences,
reports, and appearing in the press. Any use of data contained in the Data Base
can be referenced from the original source citation.
The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base is funded by USAID and data are maintained
under agreement number GHA-T-00-08-00002-00 by the Health Studies Branch,
International Programs Center, Population Division, U.S. Census Bureau. The Web
site is maintained by the Analysis, Information, Management, and Communications
Activity (AIM), a USAID resource.
